I am a Kingston-based painter whose work explores colour, light and a connection with the natural world. I paint figures, portraits, landscapes, still life and abstracts, working primarily in oil and acrylic. In my series Portraits in Nature, I explore an imaginative relationship between the female figure and the wilderness. Set within magical landscapes, the paintings consider tenderness, strength, vulnerability and the possibility of living in greater harmony with nature. My solo show Faces and Other Abstract Landscapes explores connections with people through portraiture. Sometimes, when I'm really lucky, there is a transference of a person’s inner world onto the canvas that is magical. I strive to capture a sense of the person rather than a precise likeness. In the abstract versions of the portraits I try to convey the intangible emotional connection with the person. I create paintings shaped by my experience of the natural world. Through colour, composition and atmosphere, I express a feeling as much as a particular place or person. My work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces in Kingston and Toronto, and is held in collections in Canada, England and Bolivia.
