In this hands-on workshop, join artist Jamie Janx Johnston to learn all about murals from the design process to the final wall. Jamiewill define the various roles and complexities in the world of mural production. Participants will acquire the problem solving skills to address every angle of mural production, including a hands-on site evaluation component in small groups.
This workshop will cover:
- Wall evaluation, including common challenges and solutions
- Techniques and best practices for prepping a wall
- Materials selection and considerations, including overviews of spray paint and exterior latex or oil-based paint and when each would be used
- Understanding sketching techniques for varied surfaces
- Overview of equipment commonly used, such as ladders, scissor lifts, cherry pickers and scaffolding, discussion of safety considerations
- Techniques for scaling your work
- The importance of documentation
- Budgeting, how to calculate materials cost, accounting for insurance, production time and other considerations
This workshop is for:
- Those wanting to learn more about the process of creating murals
- Anyone looking to understand how to translate their work onto a bigger canvas
- People who are curious about public art but don’t know where to start
