Starting off with a spectacular collaborative sound-making/spoken word workshop and performance by the band LAL, founded by Rosina Kazi and Nicholas Murray, Agnes launches the events for this year’s orientation week, welcoming new and returning students to campus!
Creating and recording a musical background with found sounds and our bodies (hands, mouths, feet!) as well as a poetry / spoken word / abstract word pieces, the workshop is both a collaborative process and an introduction to recording and sound creation. The workshop is open to all, regardless of previous experience (or no experience at all!) and each participant takes home an mp3 of the collective work created.
LAL has been performing and recording for over 20 years and has been conducting sound workshops all over the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). They provide workshops that utilize anti-oppression and feminist practices. Respect being key in how they work with community.

Karaoke is our community in song, our channel of catharsis. I’ve seen versions of AQUA and Tina Turner that are burned into my memory. Karaoke is the forgery, the dupe, the knockoff raised to the status of a new original fuelled by the enthusiasm of the amateur. Come sing with us at Union Gallery in a warm and welcoming space of resonant expression. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but even better is your will to mark the song with the distinctiveness of your spirit.
Biography
Fan Wu is a multidisciplinary artist and curator. His new band with Thom Gill, The Heart of Going La, explores the intersection between funk & jazz idioms and Buddhist & Daoist mantras. Panache Eh is an enthusiastic and dynamic musical duo that loves to have fun and entertain children and adults alike. The group enjoys performing classic French and English children’s songs with humour and joy. The show includes plush friends, the puppets Lulu Rabbit and Albert Paca, who often come out to sing when given a little encouragement. Audiences of all ages are invited to join in the fun as they play ukulele, guitar, harmonica, dulcimer and tambourine. The best part is when the audience joins in as an improvised rhythm section, using instruments provided by the band!

Panache Eh est un duo musical enthousiaste et dynamique qui aime s’amuser et divertir les enfants et les adultes. Le groupe aime jouer des chansons classiques françaises et anglaises pour enfants avec humour et joie. Le spectacle comprend des amis en peluche, les marionnettes Lulu Rabbit et Albert Paca qui sortent souvent pour chanter lorsqu’on les encourage un peu. Les spectateurs de tous âges sont invités à se joindre à la fête pendant qu’ils jouent du ukulélé, de la guitare, de l’harmonica, du dulcimer et du tambourin. Le meilleur de ces moments, c’est lorsque le grand public participe en tant que section rythmique improvisée, en utilisant les instruments fournis par le groupe!
