Artists Lost 28,000 Jobs
In 2020, Canadian artists lost a total of 28,491 gigs due to COVID- 19. This resulted in $20,050,521 total income lost in 2020 for Canadian Artists. A large portion of lost gigs were performances, but initiatives including education, festivals, and outreach were also greatly affected.
25% employment drop in the arts
Employment in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector [NAICS 71] fell from 450,500 in 2019 to 336,100 jobs in 2020. That’s a 25.4% drop for employment in the arts in Canada. Arts and culture workers anticipate a recovery period of at least 18 months.
Art Improves Community
According to a recent survey, 90% of Ontario residents agreed that an active local arts scene helps make a community a better place to live and 88% of Ontario residents believed that if their community lost its arts activities, people living there would lose something of value.
